The Solas Project

Solas is online network that allows patients to keep in touch with friends & family through email & sms messaging, keep up with current events, write stories and listen to music.

Initially developed for in-patients in the oncology unit, the Kellogg’s Jump for Joy funds this year will go toward expanding the network to other wards in the hospital. The hope is that the network will help to distract patients from their illness, while easing the boredom, loneliness and isolation that hospitalized children often experience.

Clown Doctors

Dr Fairy Dust, Dr Funnybones and Dr Scatterbrain are just some of the humour professionals that have been spreading laughter throughout the corridors and wards of Our Lady’s since Autumn 2005.

These professional actors, trained at the Humour Foundation of Ireland (HFI), visited over 2,000 patients in their first six months at the hospital. They help children and parents take their minds off, even for a short while, a child’s sickness. And they work to create a happy environment for the doctors and nurses who work tirelessly to help their young patients get well.

There are many special moments that clown doctors experience every day. One such moment occurred recently when a young child ran up the foyer to Dr D. Licious to say “All my bugs are gone. I’m going home. I love you.”

The clown doctors at Our Lady’s are proving that laughter truly is the best medicine.

Each teacher participating in the project will receive commemorative high quality 100% cotton polo shirt.
