Less than two hours from Frankfurt and picturesquely situated on the slopes surrounding the river Rhine, Rüdesheim was the holiday destination for the German and British royal families throughout the 18th & 19th centuries.

Now it is rapidly becoming one of the world’s most popular destinations. Anyone who has taken in the sights and sounds of the world-famous “Drosselgasse” or the “Niederwald Monument” will confirm its beauty and charm.

Walking is the perfect way to discover the vineyards, fairy tale forest and castles in the region with beautiful panoramic views into the valley along the way. Our five days of hill walking will also take us along The Rheinsteig, Germany’s number one walking trail. This promises stunning hiking and an impressive natural experience to delight a hikers` heart.

The evenings are cheery in Rüdesheim’s Old Town with its cosy wine taverns and inviting restaurants offer plenty of local tastes and entertainment.

Rory Byrne lived for his family, his friends and his running. He competed with Blackrock Athletic Club, Clonliffe Harriers and Blackheath Harriers.

Rory was a very talented athlete, in 2002 Rory ran a very competitive time of 2.28 in the Dublin City Marathon but perhaps his outstanding athletic performance was 66 minutes for a half marathon.

Up to June 2009 he was training for the Dublin City Marathon in October 2009, and was expecting a personal best time. Rory had been receiving treatment for a brain tumour since 2005.

Unfortunately he passed away in December 2009 at the age of 35.

2010 Climb for Kids Mount Kilimanjaro Challenge Day 5

They’ve done it! Our team have reached the top of Mount Kilimanjaro. 26 out of our group of 28 have managed the climb. All here at the Children’s Medical and Research Foundation are extremely proud of our team of climbers. They have faced a tremendous challenge head on and have made all their supporters across the country extremely proud.

While thinking today of their hiker buddy Adam who sings “Whiskey in the Jar” with Darren Holden and the High Kings on the single that has just been released in aid of Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, the group managed to tackle those last few grueling meters.

It was not an easy task and many if not all were hit extremely hard by the altitude sickness. Well done to all who took on this grueling task to raise funds and awareness for the sick children of Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin.

We will be at the airport at 10am on Monday morning (the 18th) to welcome the group home. We ask anyone and everyone who would like to welcome the group home to join us on Monday morning.

Edel O’Malley the Director of Operations here at CMRF managed to have a hurried telephone call with Sarah and Johann today. The team while thinking today of their Hiker Buddy Adam, managed to get passed the Barranco Wall.

The team were due to reach camp at around 4pm and to be in their tents by 6pm for a few hours sleep before beginning their night time walk to reach the summit at dawn tomorrow morning.

Conditions have gotten harder now. Sleep is almost impossible as with the Diamox (altitude sickness tablets) everyone needs to go to the toilet regularly and with icicles hanging from the tents that’s not an easy feat.

One of our fundraisers was made turn back as the altitude sickness and the freezing temperatures were just too much to take.

Everyone is looking forward to reaching the summit in the morning. Satellite positioning willing we will be able to hear them on the Ryan Tubridy show giving a live interview on how it feels to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.

2010 Climb for Kids Mount Kilimanjaro Challenge Day 3

At lunch time today the group had just reached 4,600 meters! Everyone is starting to find it tough as the air is very thin and breathing has become a challenge. It gets very cold at night and the group are finding it very hard to sleep but they are trying to keep themselves going by thinking today of their Hiker Buddy Kayleigh and all the hardships she and her family face day in and day out at Crumlin Hospital.

Thinking of Kayleigh really helps lift the team’s spirit and despite the nausea, headaches and upset tummy’s (as a result of the altitude sickness) the group are still determined to push on and make it to the summit on Friday morning.

Tomorrow’s walk is a big one as they have to tackle the “Barranco Wall” which has been known to knock a few people out of the challenge of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, so here’s hoping our team can all pull through it.

One of our celebs Karl Spain (comedian) had to turn back today. Karl has diabetes and he was afraid he had taken too much sugar. Rather than going on and jeopardising the rest of the team as well as his own health he turned back. Karl has touched base with us here at CMRF and is fine, in fact he has just learned that due to the challenge of the climb he hadn’t taken enough sugar!

To support the rest of our team of now 27 climbers as they face the tough challenges ahead you can log onto www.climbforkids.ie and make a donation or sign up to “kinda” climb Kili with the group.
2010 Climb For Kids Mount Kilimanjaro Challenge Day 2

2010 Climb for Kids Mount Kilimanjaro Challenge Day 2

Today I managed to have a quick conversation with Sarah and Johann both staff members of The Children’s Medical and Research Foundation. They are having serious technical issues and were unable to do some of their scheduled interviews today. The only phone they have that still works is the satellite phone but unfortunately the satellite keeps moving and dropping their signal!

After a long days walk thinking of their Hiker Buddy Colm the group finally set up camp for their first sleep on the mountain. Some of our fundraisers found it hard to drift off to sleep but that could have been due to the sing song that was taking place in the tent next door. Darren Holden sang the night away with one of our long time fundraisers Pat Cunningham who accompanied him on guitar. They even sang “Whiskey in the Jar” for Hiker Buddy Adam who is featured on Darren’s single which is now at no 6 in the charts after Darren’s interview on the Late Late show with Ryan Tubridy. We are hoping that this single will be pushed up to no 1 for summit day on Friday. If you wish to help push Darren’s single with Adam to the number 1 spot you can do so by downloading it from itunes.

Everyone was up at 6.30am and ready to leave the camp by 7.30am this morning. Breakfast consisted of nice warm porridge and tea. As they reached the 3,800 feet mark at lunch time some of the group began to experience tingles in their hands and feet which is a direct result of the altitude. Everyone is taking plenty of Diamox to combat the altitude sickness so fingers crossed that it works for them all. When things get tough today they will be thinking of their Hiker Buddy Jack and the struggles he and his family face.

The sky this morning was bright and blue, but this afternoon the heavens opened and soaked our team to the bone. The views are spectacular and our camera man “Holly” and director Micheal Sheridan are getting plenty of footage for our documentary.

To help support our team of 28 fundraisers as they climb up Mount Kilimanjaro why not sign up to take part in our National Pedometer Challenge and “kinda” climb Killi. You can do this by logging on to www.climbforkids.ie e-mailing climbforkids@cmrf.org or Locall 1890 507 508

2010 Climb For Kids Mount Kilimanjaro Challenge

2010 Climb For Kids Mount Kilimanjaro Challenge

The brave team from Crumlin arrived safe and sound in Moshi at 8pm Saturday evening, and were in their hotel the Protea Hotel Aishi Machame at 9pm, where they were fed watered and hit their beds tired from an early morning start and long day traveling.

The next morning was spent being briefed by the local guide Simon and the Action Challenge team, and learning how best to pack their bags for the trek up the mountain. The team now have three bags. One day bag for up the mountain, one mountain bag with various essentails for survival and a third bag for the last night when they return to the hotel filled with clean clothes and hopefully shower gel!

A medical briefing was also given to the Team from the doctor and everyone had individual consultations with him to be sure they were ready to begin their challenge.

Sile Seoige was on to the Daily Mail and Ruth Scott was talking to Padyy McKenna from 2FM to give them an insight into how they are feeling now that they can see the large mountain that will be their challenge first thing in the morning!

Best of luck to the team of 28 brave men and women as they begin the challenge of a lifetime all to raise funds and awareness for the sick children of Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin.

Day 10 was phenomenal success with 13,668 steps taken! I’m in awe of myself and how much I have walked. I am now at 34,171 steps only 4,729 steps left to take and I’ve “kinda” climbed Mount Kilimanjaro! I never thought that I would be able to say I have “kinda” climbed that distance. I’m excited to reach my own “summit” hopefully by the end of the week :)

Day 9 was a moderate success with 1,613 steps taken. I’m glad I’m back into the swing of things and hopefully this is the end of my pedometer problems.

 I’m now at a total of 20,503 steps, I can’t believe I’m almost there wohoo :)

Well after all my talk of being extra careful in making sure I always had my pedometer with me, I actually went to the gym without my pedometer after putting it in my handbag to be sure I didn’t forget it in the morning!

I did however manage to rack up 2,319 steps in work and I also climbed 973 meters between the crosstrainer of death and the treadmill! I went home tired but happy that I have almost 2,000 meters climbed out of 5,929.

	<regular-body>

Day 5 was another disaster, I forgot my pedometer and even though I’m sure I racked up plenty of steps on the dance floor that night it’s another day with a big fat 0 on my poster.

Day 6 was a very lazy day spent lounging around the house so no steps were racked up at all!

Day 7 was slightly more successful with 1,214 steps counted which brings my total for the first week up to 16,571 steps taken and 1,018 meters climbed.

This week I am going to make more of an effort to make sure I have my pedometer with me at all times. When I take it off at night I am putting it in my handbag so I don’t forget it in the morning. I am also never putting my pedometer in my pocket again I will keep it on my waistband where it is recommended to keep it as I don’t want to reset it in my pocket again!

Get on your boots and grab a pedometer!

 Monday 27th September

The excitement is steadily building ahead of the Climb for Kids - Mount Kilimanjaro climb and no where is more pysched than the corridors of RTE 2FM as Ruth Scott & Paddy McKenna kicked off the National Pedometer Challenge this morning on The Breakfast Show.

Sheilia from the RTE Library is pitting her steps against Brian Dobson from the newsroom in her quest to log more steps in the Climb for Kids Pedometer Challenge

On the show this morning as the nation woke from its collective slumber, Ruth & Paddy matched Sheila from the RTE cd library against Brian Dobson from the RTE Newsroom. Results tomorrow morning on the Breakfast Show at 8:30am!

If you want to take part in the challenge, why not challenge someone from your own workplace similar to what Shelia and Brian have done and raise funds for Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin and the National Children’s Research Centre.

Why would I want to get up at 5am on a Sunday morning?

Climb for Kids - Mount Kilimanjaro (34 days to summit) <regular-body>

Why would I want to get up at 5am on a Sunday morning?

 Sunday 12th September

I’m not sure where the idea originated from but at 5am this morning, a siren went off in the Lynam’s Hostel giving each of us 30 minutes to get out of our bunk beds, get dressed and be outside with our head torches on. I should state at this point that this wasn’t some practical joke but was intended to simulate our summit climb of Kilimanjaro in the dark in 33 days day time. Great idea Kieran!

The image of sunrise in the Wicklow hills was stunning

After a brief spell back in bed, it was time for breakfast and then a day hike much to everyone’s relief. We were joined this time though by Heather Irvine from Columbia Clothing who seemed to have forgotten her hiking boots and had to cope with runners instead. The group didn’t let her live that one down!

Ross takes Heather ‘Columbia’ Irvine to buy her some hiking shoes

The one thing I will say is that she did clock today’s route on her Garmin Forerunner 405. You can see the route at http://connect.garmin.com/activity/48914488, which showed that we covered 8.6 miles (13.8 kms), took 4 and half hours and climbed to 1,600 ft during the afternoon. One man who powered his way along the route was comedian Alan Shortt. Looking for that extra boost, Alan consumed one energy gel (recommended for quick burst of energy) and four energy bars (recommended for slow release of energy over a 4 hour period). You can imagine how much sleep Alan didn’t get that night and what a crash awaited him on Monday!

Our Sunday hiking group outside of Laragh, County Wicklow

I did have to exercise my mountain skills ability though on that final descent as Mary handed me the map 3km’s from home and told me to lead the way. All very well and good doing this on your own but when you have 25 people and a recording documentary team behind you, it is very different! Apart from one encounter with a fence (which by the way everyone followed me into!), we found the homeward path and got home safe and sound.

One of those “I know where I’m going” moments

So a full weekend done and dusted and it was back to Lynam’s Hotel for a full de-brief with our guides. A resounding thumbs up was the verdict from Kieran. Exposed to every weather condition in an Irish summer, faced with hikes twice the length of some of the day hikes in Kilimanjaro and even with the experience of an early morning hike in the dark under our belts, we were gearing up nicely for the biggest challenge many of us would ever face in our lives. All though for a wonderful cause in Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin and the National Children’s Research Centre.

 Kilimanjaro. Bring it on!

Hannah's Blog Day 4

	<post date="Fri, 24 Sep 2010 09:04:41" date-gmt="2010-09-24 16:04:41 GMT" format="html" id="1179386970" reblog-key="xoc1uoYf" slug="climb-for-kids-mount-kilimanjaro-pedometer-challenge" type="regular" unix-timestamp="1285344281" url="http://cmrf-hannah.tumblr.com/post/1179386970" url-with-slug="http://cmrf-hannah.tumblr.com/post/1179386970/climb-for-kids-mount-kilimanjaro-pedometer-challenge"><regular-title>Climb For Kids - Mount Kilimanjaro Pedometer Challenge 2010</regular-title> <regular-body>

Day 4 was what can only be described as disastrous! On leaving work I noted my pedometer had racked up over 3,000 steps, being on the post run clearly helped boost my steps. Unfortunately while I was out later on that evening I looked at my pedometer to find I had only 136 steps taken!!! I had managed to reset my pedometer accidentally in my pocket. Needless to say I was heartbroken that my efforts for the whole day couldn’t be recorded.

It had been said to me by some members of the CMRF staff that if you rack up your steps while wearing high heels your steps should be tripled, and after last night I wholeheartedly agree. My feet are sore and I feel like I have climbed Kilimanjaro twice in the one night and to top it off I have no steps to show for it. The only thing that eases the blow is knowing that while the team are climbing the real Mount Kilimanjaro I’m sure they will wish they were just running around in a pair of heels. It’s probably nothing compared to what they’re in for.

Johann Fox is the project manager and will be climbing Mt Kilimanjaro along with the rest of the team. He has been blogging the team’s training, you can read all about their hardships here http://cmrfcrumlin.tumblr.com/

	<post date="Fri, 24 Sep 2010 01:58:02" date-gmt="2010-09-24 08:58:02 GMT" format="html" id="1178000921" reblog-key="cSzG6UEh" slug="climb-for-kids-mount-kilimanjaro-pedometer-challenge" type="regular" unix-timestamp="1285318682" url="http://cmrf-hannah.tumblr.com/post/1178000921" url-with-slug="http://cmrf-hannah.tumblr.com/post/1178000921/climb-for-kids-mount-kilimanjaro-pedometer-challenge"><regular-title>Climb For Kids - Mount Kilimanjaro Pedometer Challenge 2010</regular-title> <regular-body>

Day 3 of my pedometer challenge was not nearly as successful as day 2. Even with my pointless attempts to run for cover from the rain I only managed 1,974 steps. Still that brings my total so far to 15,357 only 23,543 left, that’s almost half the distance the team will go up Mount Kilimanjaro! It’s amazing how all the steps you take through out the day add up. I thought I did a lot of running around yesterday compared to the day before but the difference in steps is indisputable I clearly wasn’t! Hopefully since I was on the post run today I’ll have some more steps racked up!

Hannah's Blog Day 2

Hannah- Day 2 of my Climb For Kids Mount Kilimanjaro Pedometer Challenge 2010 <regular-body>

Yesterday was my second day “kinda” climbing Kili and I made a conscious effort to run upstairs to deliver messages instead of e-mailing them or picking up the phone. It made a huge difference to the amount of steps I took. Yesterday I managed a whopping 11,423 steps!

Yesterday was also my first day counting the meters I climb in the gym. After 20 minutes on the treadmill and another 20 on the crosstrainer (which is my personal favourite to hate) I managed to climb 1,018 meters!

I was tired and sore heading home but I felt great knowing that what I was doing would make a difference in the lives of children in Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital. I also had a new appreciation for the challenge the Team from Crumlin face as they climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Considering I found it difficult in a nice air conditioned gym, I can only imagine the hardship they face with a much shorter amount of time to complete the challenge, the freezing temperatures and added altitude sickness!

Best of luck to all the brave team heading off from CMRF! It’s no wonder you are all training so hard in preparation.

Hannah's Blog News Update

<tumblr version="1.0"><tumblelog name="cmrf-hannah" timezone="US/Pacific" title="CMRF Hannah">My name is Hannah and I work in development and support for the Children's Medical & Research Foundation, Our Lady's Children's Hospital, Crumlin, - I’ve decided to take on the challenge to “kinda” climb Kili with the Team that are climbing Mount Kilimanjaro this October. It will take them approx 38,900 steps to reach the summit of 19,450 ft! We will reach the summit on the 15th of October. I will use my lovely 2FM pedometer to count my steps here in Ireland. While our team battle sub zero temperatures and altitude sickness I will be running up and down the stairs in our building several times to rack up my number of steps!

If you would like more information on the National Pedometer Challenge please check out our website www.cmrf.org or locall us on 1890 507 508

As an added personal challenge I am going to try climb the same height as the team. It averages out at about 228 meters a day so hopefully I will climb 456m every second day!

Yesterday I managed 1,960 steps only 36,940 left to go…

We are holding a charity event in memory of our son Oran who passed away in Our Lady's on the 19th May 2010 just three days old having gone a full term pregnancy. Oran was diagnosed with congenital heart defects known as "Hypo-plastic Left Heart Syndrome" and "Total Anomolous Pulmonary Drainage", which meant his heart was under-developed and in turn this affected his brain functions and meant he wouldn't be strong enough for surgery. The event is a Head Shaving/Chest or Leg Waxing night. It will take place on Saturday 6th November, in The Mill Bar, Bealnamullia, Athlone. All proceeds will go to the Paediatrics Intensive Care Unit on floor 2 where Oran was taken care of by the most kindred of spirits. And this is out way of making our Son's name live on by giving back to the hospital. Every one welcome.
