Kilometres for Kids ING New York City Marathon - 28 March 2012
Irish cycling legend Stephen Roche has lent his support to the 'Fix Crumlin' campaign which aims to raise the €8 million required to carry out essential upgrading of the cardiac and cancer units at Our Lady's Children's Hospital in Crumlin, Dublin.
Our national fundraising campaign moved up a gear with the announcement that Roche - who this year celebrates the 25th anniversary of his Giro d'Italia, Tour de France and World Championships treble - has joined another Irish sporting legend, Eamon Coghlan, to launch our new fundraising initiative titled 'Kilometres for Kids'.
‘Kilometres for Kids’ is a series of challenges in Ireland and overseas where, through sponsorship, participants will be directly translating your kilometres into vital funds required to ‘Fix Crumlin’, thereby providing state-of-the art facilities for our seriously ill children.
Together, Stephen and Eamon are inviting Irish cyclists, runners and walkers of all levels to join them in one or both of the following events – The Kilometres for Kids Cycling Challenge with Stephen Roche which takes place at Stephen’s cycling camp on the island of Mallorca from 6th - 13th October and The Kilometres for Kids New York City Marathon with Team Eamon Coghlan from 1st - 7th November.
At Stephen’s Cycling Camp in Mallorca, participants will join cycling legend, Stephen Roche and his team for a week-long Cycling Challenge that will celebrate the 25th anniversary of one of the greatest years in Irish cycling history – 1987, when Stephen became only the second cyclist in history to win the Triple Crown of Victories - the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia and the World Championship, all within the same year.
In ‘The Big Apple’, participants will team up with three-time Olympian and former world champion athlete, Eamon Coghlan to run in the famed NYC Marathon which, this year, celebrates the 20th anniversary of Team Coghlan’s first involvement in what has become the world’s biggest marathon. Open to participants of all levels, those joining Eamonn’s team will have the option of running, jogging or walking through the five boroughs of New York City as they absorb the sights and sounds of the city.
"If you’re already active or looking to get fit, this is an ideal opportunity to get on your bike and ensure that the effort put in converts into urgent funds needed to fix the cramped outdated facilities at Crumlin," he added
Echoing this comment, Eamon Coghlan added: ‘The NYC marathon is a truly memorable event for runners and walkers of all levels. It’s all about being part of something that’s bigger than yourself while helping those who need it most. The NYC marathon is a truly international event with fundraisers from over 40 countries taking part. The sense of achievement you get is incredible which is why I’ve been involved for 20 years.

Join us in Rüdesheim, the gateway to the UNESCO world heritage site Middle-Rhine-Valley. Less than two hours from Frankfurt and picturesquely situated on the slopes surrounding the river Rhine, Rüdesheim was the holiday destination for the German and British royal families throughout the 18th & 19th centuries.
Now it is rapidly becoming one of the world’s most popular destinations. Anyone who has taken in the sights and sounds of the world-famous “Drosselgasse” or the “Niederwald Monument” will confirm its beauty and charm.
Walking is the perfect way to discover the vineyards, fairy tale forest and castles in the region with beautiful panoramic views into the valley along the way. Our five days of hill walking will also take us along The Rheinsteig, Germany’s number one walking trail. This promises stunning hiking and an impressive natural experience to delight a hikers` heart.
The evenings are cheery in Rüdesheim’s Old Town with its cosy wine taverns and inviting restaurants offer plenty of local tastes and entertainment.
Kerala Trek, India - 01 December 2010
This stunning trek takes place in Kerala the jewel in the crown of the sub continent of India. With the Arabian Sea in the west, the Western Ghats towering 500-2700 m in the east and networked by forty-four rivers, Kerala enjoys diverse geographical features. From tall mountains and deep valleys to endless backwaters and a beautiful coastline, Kerala has it all.
Celebrated as the Spice Coast of India, ancient Kerala played host to travellers and traders from across the world including the Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Chinese, Portuguese, Dutch, French and the British. Almost all of them have left their imprint on this land in some form or the other - architecture, cuisine, literature.
Our trek will take us from Munnar across the famous tea estates of Letchmi and Kolukkumalai, through the forests of Gavi and Periyar wildlife sanctuaries, back to the stunning coast of Alleppey.
The combination of breathtaking views, challenging walks and some of the warmest hospitality you will find anywhere make Kerala an ideal destination for our 2011 trekking challenge. You will enjoy all of the magical sights, sounds and smells that make India the most unique destination in the world. Only when you have been to Kerala can you understand why it is named “God’s own country”.

Rory Byrne lived for his family, his friends and his running. He competed with Blackrock Athletic Club, Clonliffe Harriers and Blackheath Harriers.
Rory was a very talented athlete, in 2002 Rory ran a very competitive time of 2.28 in the Dublin City Marathon but perhaps his outstanding athletic performance was 66 minutes for a half marathon.
Up to June 2009 he was training for the Dublin City Marathon in October 2009, and was expecting a personal best time. Rory had been receiving treatment for a brain tumour since 2005.
Unfortunately he passed away in December 2009 at the age of 35.

Climb for Kids -Mount Kilimanjaro Pedometer Challenge - 26 September 2010
Day 4 was what can only be described as disastrous! On leaving work I noted my pedometer had racked up over 3,000 steps, being on the post run clearly helped boost my steps. Unfortunately while I was out later on that evening I looked at my pedometer to find I had only 136 steps taken!!! I had managed to reset my pedometer accidentally in my pocket. Needless to say I was heartbroken that my efforts for the whole day couldn’t be recorded.
It had been said to me by some members of the CMRF staff that if you rack up your steps while wearing high heels your steps should be tripled, and after last night I wholeheartedly agree. My feet are sore and I feel like I have climbed Kilimanjaro twice in the one night and to top it off I have no steps to show for it. The only thing that eases the blow is knowing that while the team are climbing the real Mount Kilimanjaro I’m sure they will wish they were just running around in a pair of heels. It’s probably nothing compared to what they’re in for.
Johann Fox is the project manager and will be climbing Mt Kilimanjaro along with the rest of the team. He has been blogging the team’s training, you can read all about their hardships here http://cmrfcrumlin.tumblr.com/
Climb for Kids -Mount Kilimanjaro Pedometer Challenge - 26 September 2010
Day 3 of my pedometer challenge was not nearly as successful as day 2. Even with my pointless attempts to run for cover from the rain I only managed 1,974 steps. Still that brings my total so far to 15,357 only 23,543 left, that’s almost half the distance the team will go up Mount Kilimanjaro! It’s amazing how all the steps you take through out the day add up. I thought I did a lot of running around yesterday compared to the day before but the difference in steps is indisputable I clearly wasn’t! Hopefully since I was on the post run today I’ll have some more steps racked up!
If you would like to join me and start “kinda” climbing your own Mount Kilimanjaro please log onto http://www.cmrf.org/event/show/3768 or locall 1890 507 508

Climb for Kids -Mount Kilimanjaro Pedometer Challenge - 23 September 2010
Hannah- Day 2 of my Climb For Kids Mount Kilimanjaro Pedometer Challenge 2010
Yesterday was my second day “kinda” climbing Kili and I made a conscious effort to run upstairs to deliver messages instead of e-mailing them or picking up the phone. It made a huge difference to the amount of steps I took. Yesterday I managed a whopping 11,423 steps!
Yesterday was also my first day counting the meters I climb in the gym. After 20 minutes on the treadmill and another 20 on the crosstrainer (which is my personal favourite to hate) I managed to climb 1,018 meters!
I was tired and sore heading home but I felt great knowing that what I was doing would make a difference in the lives of children in Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital. I also had a new appreciation for the challenge the Team from Crumlin face as they climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Considering I found it difficult in a nice air conditioned gym, I can only imagine the hardship they face with a much shorter amount of time to complete the challenge, the freezing temperatures and added altitude sickness!
Best of luck to all the brave team heading off from CMRF! It’s no wonder you are all training so hard in preparation.

As an added personal challenge I am going to try climb the same height as the team. It averages out at about 228 meters a day so hopefully I will climb 456m every second day!
Yesterday I managed 1,960 steps only 36,940 left to go…

We are holding a charity event in memory of our son Oran who passed away in Our Lady's on the 19th May 2010 just three days old having gone a full term pregnancy. Oran was diagnosed with congenital heart defects known as "Hypo-plastic Left Heart Syndrome" and "Total Anomolous Pulmonary Drainage", which meant his heart was under-developed and in turn this affected his brain functions and meant he wouldn't be strong enough for surgery. The event is a Head Shaving/Chest or Leg Waxing night. It will take place on Saturday 6th November, in The Mill Bar, Bealnamullia, Athlone. All proceeds will go to the Paediatrics Intensive Care Unit on floor 2 where Oran was taken care of by the most kindred of spirits. And this is out way of making our Son's name live on by giving back to the hospital. Every one welcome.
