You can help Certain childhood cancers are a real challenge. 20% of the 160 children who will be diagnosed with some form of cancer this year in Ireland will die inside five years. It’s such a difficult road for all of the children who are diagnosed with cancer – and for their families. Every child with cancer, up to the age of 16 will be treated and cared for here at Crumlin – in St John’s Ward. The critical challenge The ward environment poses a huge problem. There are no private rooms for the most critical or terminally-ill children. There are no private ...
You can help. All of Ireland’s young cardiac patients –our littlest hearts – come to Crumlin Hospital for treatment and surgery. Congenital Heart Defects are the most common of all birth defects affecting one in every 100 children. These severe and complex problems are one of the leading causes of infant death. Half of all babies born with a heart defect will need very serious surgery and Crumlin is where they get it. Some 550 heart operations are performed in Our Lady’s every year. The critical challenge The current infant facility is completely outdated ...
Medicine is not the answer to all of the child’s requirements when in hospital. Sometimes something that just bit extra is required. Music can step into that space with a positive effect on the physical and emotional well being of patients as they undergo stressful treatment. We are delighted to say thata recent donation by a Dublin family of €60,000 has enabled a child-orientated programme of classical music to be perfomed in the three children's hospitals in Dublin over the next three years. This generous contribution will improve the quality of our patients’ lives. With ...
Our hospital’s kitchen was ageing, run down and needed upgrading. The equipment was out of date and needed quite a lot of repair work. Through your donations and gifts, Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin has a completely renovated kitchen that gives our catering team a place to prepare the meals for our patients, their families and our staff to ensure that they are all properly fed and provided for. Years of planning went in to the project and it was a huge challenge for everyone involved. Some of the fixtures removed were the originals! The work was carried out in ...
Most treatments and interactions with our patients are medical in nature, and can often involve painful procedures. This can be a scary time for children and their families: all that is normal is put on hold. Thanks to the Julie WrenTrust we have been able to offer a complementary service for Haematology Oncology Patients(Cancer Patients) and their families. Complementary therapy offers a positive opportunity for child and family participation, which is crucial at a time when children are often socially isolated. The therapies that are currently being provided in the unit are Hand and Foot ...
Play is central to the healthy growth and development of the child and young person. Through all aspects of our work we know that the provision of quality places, spaces for play is vital to the healthy development of our children and adolescents. It is universally accepted that play and recreation activities play a significant role in fulfilling the child’s right to the highest attainable standard of health and to preventive health care. However, up until now, our sick teenagers’ recreational needs in Crumlin have not been adequately met. It was one man’s dream that changed ...
Many of our children in hospital face a hard time. Clown Doctors attend to the psycho-social needs of the hospitalised child. They parody the hospital routine to help children adapt to hospital. Oversized medical equipment, “red-nose’ transplants, ‘cat’ scans, humour checks and funny bone examinations are all part of the fun. By exaggerating intimidating jargon and procedures to extremes, fear and anxiety are reduced. Everyone benefits…patients, families and staff. Clown Doctors are highly skilled professionals and work in partnership with health professionals. ‘Clown ...

The role of hospital pharmacy has changed greatly over the decades to provide a facility for a Tertiary Paediatric Hospital that treats children with complex illnesses. The pharmacy is now recognised as a key support to the vital clinical services provided by Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital. This is especially so in a paediatric setting due to its unique child patient mix and their highly specialised requirements. The procurement and administration of paediatric medications is radically different to that found in the adult setting, requiring extra preparation, manipulation, education ...
BabyPAC is specially designed to deliver ventilation to small, fragile lungs with precision and confidence, whether in neonatal intensive care or in the difficult circumstances of transport. It is small and lightweight; the babyPAC mounts easily on the side of an incubator or an IV pole, making it ideal for use in the hospital or during emergency situations. “It's a very easy and portable piece of equipment which improves my ability to deliver ventilation to little babies anywhere, even in the tightest spaces like our helicopter.” according to Jim Davenport, Chief Clinical ...
